Van Buren High School Seniors Emily Brown and Sydney Moomey have been selected as the 2023 recipients of Harry O. Hamm Foundation Trust Scholarships.
Administered by the Trust Department of Citizens Bank & Trust Company, the Hamm Foundation Scholarships are funded from an endowment by Harry O. Hamm, who died in 1997. Mr. Hamm attended elementary school in Van Buren and left his entire estate to provide scholarships for the post secondary education of Van Buren High School graduates. The individual scholarship awards are vauled up to $8,000 per academic year for up to five years.
Emily Brown is the daughter of Bettina Champion and the late Keith Brown. She plans to attend the University of Arkansas Fort Smith and major in Radiography, with hopes of becoming a CT/MRI Technician. Emily is a member of the VBHS Marching Band, History Club, Project Lead the Way – Biomedical, and Mu Alpha Theta, for which she received an award in 2021. Along with her club involvement, Emily received an AP Scholar and Psi Alpha award in 2023. In 2022, she participated in a two week M*A*S*H program at Mercy Hospital for students interested in the medical field, where she found an interest in radiology. When Emily isn’t volunteering in the community, she enjoys being outside and reading books.
Sydney Moomey is the daughter of Leigh and Sergeant Roy Moomey. She will attend the University of Central Arkansas and study Nursing, with the goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. While at UCA, Sydney plans to join a sorority and Chi Alpha Ministry, so she can make many new connections and friendships along the way. Sydney has been a part of the VBHS Dance and Competition Team, Art Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. At age 14, Sydney completed a summer internship with the Baptist Health Caring Teen Program. Sydney was also inducted into the National Honor Society, named Dance Captain in 2022, and was recognized as one of this year's "Top 40" Van Buren High School graduates. Not only does Sydney volunteer her time helping others, but she also loves spending time with her family and everything pertaining to fashion.
