VBSD Attendance Update

Here in the early part of our second semester, we are seeing an increase in the number of COVID cases across our community. VBSD's goal is to continue with on-site instruction as long as we have enough staff available to operate. At this time, on-site instruction and services will go on as usual across the district, including transportation.

We understand some families have concerns about sending their children to school this week amidst rising case numbers. As stated below, our attendance policy allows for absences related to extenuating circumstances. Parents who keep their child(ren) out of school any days this week (January 18-21, 2022), or who kept their child(ren) out of school any days last week (January 10-14, 2022) due to COVID or concerns related to the spread of the illness, should notify the school that "COVID" is the extenuating circumstance for the absence(s). This will allow the absence(s) to be excused.

Due to the high number of COVID-related absences, days missed last week and this week will NOT be held against secondary students in determining semester test exemption status. Per the VBSD absence policy, students who miss will be expected to either complete their work while at home or make up assignments when they return.

VBSD ABSENCE POLICY:
When a student is absent due to emergencies such as illness, death in the family and other extenuating circumstances, the parent or guardian of the student should contact the student’s principal or designee and relate the facts causing the emergency. Parents may contact the school by writing a note, in person, or by other means deemed appropriate by the school principal. Make-up work will be allowed for these absences and must be accomplished within a reasonable length of time as determined by individual teachers. En la primera parte de nuestro segundo semestre, estamos viendo un aumento en la cantidad de casos de COVID en nuestra comunidad. El objetivo de VBSD es continuar con la instrucción en el sitio siempre y cuando tengamos suficiente personal disponible para operar. En este momento, la instrucción y los servicios en el sitio continuarán como de costumbre en todo el distrito, incluyendo transporte.

Entendemos que a algunas familias les preocupa enviar a sus hijos a la escuela esta semana en medio de un número creciente de casos. Como se indica a continuación, nuestra política de asistencia permite ausencias relacionadas con circunstancias atenuantes. Padres que no envíen a la escuela a sus hijos algún día de esta semana (del 18 al 21 de Enero del 2022) o que no enviaron a la escuela a sus hijos ningún día de la semana pasada (del 10 al 14 de Enero del 2022) debido a COVID o inquietudes relacionadas con la propagación de la enfermedad, debe notificar a la escuela que "COVID" es la circunstancia atenuante de la(s) ausencia(s). Esto permitirá que la(s) ausencia(s) sean justificadas.

Debido a la gran cantidad de ausencias relacionadas con COVID, los días perdidos la semana pasada y esta semana NO se les aplicará a los estudiantes de secundaria para determinar el estado de excepción de la prueba semestral. Según la política de ausencias de VBSD, se espera que los estudiantes que falten completen su trabajo mientras están en casa o recuperen las tareas cuando regresen.

POLÍTICA DE AUSENCIAS DE VBSD:
Cuando un estudiante está ausente debido a emergencias como enfermedad, muerte en la familia y otras circunstancias atenuantes, el padre o encargado del estudiante debe comunicarse con el director del estudiante y relatar los hechos que causaron la emergencia. Los padres pueden comunicarse con la escuela escribiendo una nota, en persona o por otros medios que el director de la escuela considere apropiados. Se permitirá el trabajo de recuperación por estas ausencias y debe realizarse dentro de un período de tiempo razonable según lo determinen los maestros individuales.
