Van Buren High School Marching Band wins back-to-back state championships

The Van Buren High School Marching Band has successfully defended its state championship title. The Pointer band competed on October 29 against 30 other bands at War Memorial Stadium in the Arkansas State Marching Band Championship, coming away the victors for the second consecutive year.

VBHS won the 2018-19 State Championship with its high-energy show, “Replicant.” The band achieved a high score of 89.70. This marks the first undefeated season in school history for the VBHS Marching Band.

"We could not be more proud of our team! It's very difficult to win a single State Championship, but to win back-to-back state titles is a true testimonial to the dedication, work ethic, and passion that these musician-athletes bring to the field every day,” said VBHS Band Director Ron Smith. “Our team is so blessed to have the full support of our VBSD administrative team, our school, and our community which makes being able to bring a State Championship back to Van Buren even more rewarding!"

The state championship is among many accolades the band has garnered this year. VBHS won the Northwest Arkansas Invitational Marching Championship for the third year in a row. Earlier this season, Van Buren also earned first place at the Ozarko Invitational Marching Championship at Missouri State University. There, VBHS won awards for High Music, High Visual, Outstanding Drum Major, Outstanding Percussion, Outstanding Soloist, and was crowned the Gold Division Overall Champion, while earning the highest score at the event.

The VBHS Band will be honored during the Van Buren vs. Springdale football game this Friday, November 2. The game will be held at Blakemore Field beginning at 7 p.m.
